REPORT OF
THE ZONAL DIRECTOR FOR
AFRICA and ASIA |

A/ Activities Despite special circumstances for the year 2005, the zonal action plan proposed to the congress in Mumbai was fully respected and all competitions planed started accordingly:
- 15.12.2004 : 4th
African CC championship (by Email with 11 players) The Afro-Asian team is represented in the Interzonal 2004 with 8 players and in the Rochade Jubilee Tournament with 10 players. Many players took part to the Charity match organised conjointly by AJEC and the Africa/Asia zone. An ICP team with 6 players is ready for the next Email Olympiad, which will start in December 2005.
Two friendly matches (versus France and the Czech Republic) are now over and the results were very encouraging, with one win 16-12 and one loss 16-24 against a very strong Czech team.
The new zonal Champion is K. Sakai from Japan, who won the 5th Afro-Asian championship. Congratulations! The runner up is his countryman S. Ohtake.
The Zonal Tournament office is now working with satisfactory. Dinand Knol (RSA) has directed the 7th Afro-Asian ch, prel Arif Kucukali (TUR) took the duty as TD in the 6th Afro-Asian ch, Final as well as TC in for our team in the Rochade tournament and in the friendly match vs Romania.
Takahiro Horie (JPN) is the TC of the team in the friendly match vs Austria. Nikhil Kamat (IND) is TC of the team in the friendly match vs Sweden.
In cooperation with Dr Ole Jacobsen (BUR) who is now established in West Africa, we intend to develop the project “Sport for all” in Africa and create a structure called ICCF-WA. Discussions are in progress to integrate Ghana, Togo, … because we think it is better to have regional organisation than several weak NFs, which will be inactive as soon as the delegate disappear like we experimented with Malawi and Kenya.
With the quarterly zonal bulletin, the Africa/Asia zone has now its own webpage hosted by the European zone. A lot of thanks to Gian-Maria Tani and Giorgio Ruggeri Laderchi for their support.
B/ New ICCF members The effort is focused on two aspects: to convince players to organize themselves in structure able to join ICCF. to encourage the Federations to create CC sections when none exists in their country. We expect that the new members will be Algeria, Burkina Faso, Egypt and Morocco because the discussions are well engaged and an agreement should be concluded in the near future. Private contacts with officials from Azerbaijan, Philippines and Uzbekistan have started and will continue during the next months. The major problem is the low number of active CC players, which is the brake for the practise, and development of CC in those countries.
C/ Action Plan 2005-2006 The agenda for 2005-2006 will depend upon the election of the new ICCF President. If the current zonal Director is elected in Argentina, that means we should organize the election of the new ZD. Nevertheless, announcements have been made for: The 9th Afro-Asian championship preliminaries (start date : 15.01.2006) The 4th Asian CC championship ( start date : 01.12.2005) The start of the 8th Afro-Asian ch, FINAL. And of course AA open sections with 7 players.
D/ Miscellaneous In Daytona (ICCF Congress 2000) the ICCF congress voted a small budget for development, especially for poor countries in the zone 4 to allow their delegate to attend the congress. Only once (Rimini 2001) we used this budget for India and we have had the pleasure to meet Mr Samtani who was one of the pioneers of the AICCF in his country. We tried to repeat the same action in 2002 for Kenya but Mr Kim Bhari failed to travel to Portugal. As it is very difficult for poor Federations to have facilities to travel abroad we would like to suggest another form of financial support, particularly to build a strong ICCF – WA structure, with helping Dr Ole Jacobsenīs project with an amount of 150$ to cover the costs of internet which is still very expensive in Africa. Depending upon the results we will see if we reconduct this operation for the next years.
